Funko Pops
Funko first released the “Funko Pop” back in 2011, it’s hard to believe that these little vinyl characters have already been around for 10 years. Each piece that is released is based on a pop culture character, and the company believes that “Everyone is a fan of something”. Funko Pops are currently one of the most affordable collectibles on the market. They can be displayed either in or out of the box; however, they are more valuable if they are resold with their original box. Each regular sized Funko Pop measures 3.75” and are made out of a durable vinyl. These little figures come from so many different fandoms and characters, it would be virtually impossible for someone to own each and every single one. While they are an amazing price point, Funko releases new Pops constantly and it becomes very hard to keep up with new releases.

Funko releases new Funko Pops in their original, deluxe, 6”, 10” and 18” sizes. They also have Funko Pops Rides, Movie Moments and Towns. The Funko Pop Rides are a character who is on some sort of transportation they have been seen using in the past. Some of my favourites are the Disneyland Anniversary Funko Pops Rides of characters riding the actual rides from the parks. The Pop Towns include a character with a building they are known to be associated with. The Movie Moments that they release are characters that are posed in an iconic scene from the movie that they are from. My favourite one that I have in my collection is from The Nightmare Before Christmas set which is Lock, Shock and Barrel in the bathtub.
Funko has come a long way with the molds they use to manufacture their Pops, while most older Pops were very plain, the newer molds have a lot more details and are posed in much more dynamic poses. Funko has done a good job at making sure that their collectibles have a wide range of values. Once a Funko Pops is “vaulted” it means that it is no longer in production and the value will usually increase from there. They also have limited size releases through releases on their website and through various Comic Cons.
While my collection originally started out as being solely Funko Pops, my collection has evolved, and I kept only Disney Funko Pops from certain movies and parted ways with the rest. I wanted to make space for a variety of Disney collectibles on my shelves. Unfortunately, my space is not unlimited, and I had to choose the way I wanted to collect moving forward. Most of the Funko Community I am a part of on Instagram has encountered the same space issue with Pops. This usually leads to people having to slim down their collection every so often for make space for pieces that they will love more than some that they currently own. I believe that this is what makes collecting fun and exciting and there is nothing wrong with no longer loving something you purchased in the past and parting ways with it.
